After School Program

CCLM's After School Program provides a space where neighborhood children can play, study, and socialize on weekdays from 3:30 until 6:00 p.m. All of the program services are offered free of charge.

Children begin their afternoons eating a snack together with Power Teens and Peer Leaders. The snacks are prepared by teams of Power Teens who work under the supervision of Peer Leaders. From 4-5 p.m., children meet in class rooms according to their age group and receive tutoring and homework assistance by Power Teens and Peer Leaders. Programs are offered in both English and Spanish, with tutors and supervisors who are fluent in the language and culture of the children with whom they work.

Throughout the year, children work in creative programs oriented towards community events and social activities. Before they return home, children eat a hot meal, prepared and supervised by our teenagers and young adults.

Peer Leaders

CCLM's Peer Leaders are young adults aged 16-21 who work as program supervisors in the CCLM's youth programs. Peer Leaders direct and administer these programs and provide mentoring for Power Teens.

Peer Leaders develop job skills, socialize with their peers and with the CCLM community and learn leadership skills in the community.

Peer Leaders provide leadership in CCLM's Community Kitchen, the After School Program, the Adolescent Healthcare Program, and the After School Administrative team.

They also work in the CCLM communications team, directing a computer lab for participants in CCLM 's youth programs, administering CCLM's dark room and taking photos for CCLM's publications and web page, and working in the design and production of CCLM's printed materials and our web pages.

Peer Leaders are also active organizing community activities in the neighborhood.

The Power Teens program

Power Teens program is made of teenagers from 13-15 years of age. Power Teens receive a minimal stipend for their work and are encouraged to develop responsibility and creativity in their activities. The program also emphasizes socialization between the teens and encourages them to develop relationships with the children and young adults, staff members and other members of the CCLM community.

Power teens participate in 4 program areas: The Community Kitchen, preparing and serving snacks and meals for After School Program participants.

The After School program, helping Peer Educators provide tutoring and homework assistance for children. The Adolescent Healthcare Program, serving neighborhood youth at high risk for contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, providing peer education to prevent teen pregnancy and in the areas of nutrition and personal hygiene.

The After School Administrative team, learning office skills and developing and carrying out administrative tasks for the after school program
